A Ray of Hope

Our senior hurlers are out of the 2008 County championship. On Saturday last in Semple Stadium despite playing their best hurling of the year, they lost by a point to Clonoulty Rossmore on a 1-15 to 0-17 score line.Clonoulty will now play in the semi final next weekend. On Saturday we started slowly and fell well behind coming up to half time. In the second half having re-arranged the team, we improved and with Clonoulty shooting a number of wides, we came back into the game and even went ahead with a few minutes left.

hurleyHowever, a bit of looseness allowed Clonoulty to edge ahead again. A number of our more experienced players played quite well but in general, our younger troops did not come good. The team seemed to lack the fire of other days and this was reflected in the reaction of the crowd who didn’t get behind the team.

There were some hopeful signs. The injured Niall Curran was to be seen togged out on the sideline, while Vincent Doheny was back from his travels. On the field, Edward O Brien and Eddie Carey showed much improved form while the team had a far more balanced look at the end than it had a the beginning. It’s a pity that the team didn’t show this for at the start of the year and then they could have improved as the games went by.

We’ll look keenly at our juniors and under 21’s when we hope to see our younger players take on responsibility. Senior hurling is a grade that one earns not one that a person drifts into.

The team which began should be of interest to those who didn’t get to Thurles.

Two Lady Footballers From the Parish

E-mail Print PDF

Mairead Luttrell from Poulacapple and Eileen Brennan from Ballylanigan, both were members of the Tipperary Intermediate Ladies Football Team which won the All Ireland in Croke Park on Sunday last.

This was the first All Ireland victory in ladies football for Tipperary since 1980. It was also the first All Ireland win in Croke Park for Tipperary laladies footballdies. In the final which was shown on TG4, Tipperary defeated Clare by 0-14 to 1-8. Mairead Luttrell played in the final. Selected in the subs, she came on early in the second half when Tipperary were three points down.

She became very involved in the game and won several important frees for Tipperary as well as assisting in several Tipperary scores as they staged a great rally. Earlier in the year, Mairead was a member of the Tipperary camogie team which lost to Cork in the All Ireland Semi Final.

Eileen was also a substitute but didn’t get a chance to play. However, she too was ready, willing and able to come in if called upon. Both young ladies are a credit to Mullinahone and the local ladies football club. Credit to the officers of the club who organised a bus to take supporters to the match. It was great that Mullinahone were so well represented in Croke Park on what turned out to be a great day for Tipperary.

Michael Was a Great Friend to All

E-mail Print PDF

With the passing of Michael Walsh, the area lost a good friend and a conscientious worker. The loyalty he always displayed in his work was a trait that remained with him all his life.

As a young man he was a more than useful footballer until a knee injury curtailed his promising career. Animals were Michael’s sporting interest in life. He was an enthusiastic member of the local gun club and he also had a keen interest in horses and horse racing.

As Michael’s remains were carried into St. Michael’s church, they passed through a guard of honour made up of his many friends in both GAA and the local gun club. On his marriage to his wife Teresa, Michael moved to their new home on Carrick Road. Soon Michael became known as a school bus driver in conjunction with his father-in-law Dinny Kelly.

As always, Michael was most reliable in his new career and remained so until his retirement after more than 30 years.

Speaking at his funeral Mass Fr. McGrath PP, spoke of the quiet and ever reliable Michael that many of us had known all our lives and that others had come to know over the years. Michael was interred in St Michael’s Cemetery, Killaghy, again in the presence of a large congregation.

To Michael’s wife Teresa and to the members of both the Walsh and Kelly families, we extend our sympathy. May the soul of Michael Walsh rest in peace. His month’s mind Mass will take place in St Michael’s church on Saturday night next, September 13th at 8pm.

Co. Councillors

E-mail Print PDF

Last week we traced for you the representation from Mullinahone on South Tipp County Council in 1905. PF. Mullally of Kyleaglanna, was chairman of that council until he finally bowed out in 1908. Patrick Keating was returned unopposed in 1908, as he was in 1911 and 1914.

The council elected in 1914 held office for six years until 1920.

At that time, Patrick Keating who came from Crohane Upper had been a councillor for 15 years. The modern council format of multiple members came into force in 1920. Mullinahone became part of the Fethard area in which nine candidates contested the four seats on offer.

Patrick Keating again contested the election as did Philip Mansfield of Mullinahone. Both exceeded the quota of 406 and were elected. Both were Sinn Fein candidates. At its first meeting this council unanimously pledged its allegiance to the infant Dail Eireann, which had first met in 1919.

Patrick Keating was one of only three members who were re-elected to this post. Sinn Fein councillor on May 18th, 1921, Thomas Tobin was co-opted to the Council in place of Philip Mansfield.

The council passed a resolution calling on Dail Eireann to accept the treaty. The next election took place in 1925. prior to the election he announced his retirement after 20 years of service.

Water, Water Everywhere

“Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink” wrote the poet Samuel Coleridge a couple of hundred years ago. He could have been talking about Mullinahone parish in 2008. We have plenty of flooded fields in the area and yet in the middle of it all we have no water from the local authority mains supply in some areas.

Last week two delegations from the area in Ballydonnell and Jamestown met with local authority officials in Clonmel re their lack of water even in the present conditions. Present also at the meeting were Jimmy O Brien MCC and Tom Hayes TD. These specific problems were made clear to both officials and public representatives. The officials promised to report back to the public representatives on these problems in a week. We await developments. Meanwhile another branch of the water service is modernising meters in one of the areas. Are the new meters going to measure the fresh air in the water pipes?

Flash floods caused by heavy rain are also causing concern in the Square as pipes and gulleys seem to back up very quickly. Perhaps extra water has been diverted into these pipes further away from the river and this is causing problems. No doubt we may have some of the answers shortly.

Councillor Eddie

When Eddie O Meara was elected a member of Tipperary SR Co. Council in 1999 he was the first Mullinahone person to be so elected in 71 years, since 1928. That was far too long.

In fact no Mullinahone person had been nominated to stand for the Co. Council since 1950 when Denis O Brien, RIP, had contested the election on behalf of Fine Gael but had failed to be elected.

Make up for our loss to Ballingarry

The good run of the Tipperary senior hurlers came to an end in Croke Park on Sunday. General consensus is that the number of locals who travelled was down on the numbers who made the trip in the past.

Our own reps on the team did not let us down but now that we are out of the All Ireland we can no longer enjoy ourselves in the reflected glory of the Tipp seniors. Now we have to depend on our own local resources.

No doubt they will relish this chance because it is quite a while since we last won a knockout match in senior hurling. With Tipp out of the senior hurling the day of reckoning could come quicker than expected.

Plenty of Floods Yet No Water

Plenty of Floods Yet No Water

In common with the rest of the country Mullinahone has been deluged with extremely heavy rainfall since the beginning of the month.

On august 15th between 10am and 10am on August 16th, 42.3mm of rainfall as recorded locally. Such heavy rainfall could be expected to bring floods but fortunately they turned out to be less serious than those in the past.floods

In recent times continued heavy rain has caused concern re flooding around the square. The problem seems to be caused by pipes and drains going into the village stream which become backed up with flood waters. About ten years ago a splendid job was carried out cleaning up the village stream. This scheme as set in motion by local people helping themselves.

Later the local authority and government funds chipped in to complete the job. All has worked well until recently when problems began to show up. It now seems that surface water up towards the school has been diverted from its old path towards the river and this causes a problem for those around the square.

One local man on the Ballydonnell road was semi satisfied with flood precautions taken recently. At his own expense running well into four figures he had built up a roadside channel, passing his house to carry the roadside water past his house. At the height of the floods racing past his house the place looked like a kayak racing course.

Not a drop of water came but the same time not a drop of water was coming from his water supply on this stretch of road. It is likely to be a very hot topic in the 2009 local elections. No doubt there are plenty of people in the area who have flood water stories and water famine stories to tell.
