On Saturday morning May 17th, the streets of the little village were rather crowded. Most thought that this was because First Communion was taking place in the local St. Michael’s Church but this wasn’t entirely true.
The village at the same time receiving a visit from a troop of bikers. These about fifty in numbers, belonged to a Welsh biking group who were touring the South of Ireland. Thoughts of bikers bring trouble to the minds of the general public but this could not be further from the truth as many of the visiting group were not teenage tearaway s but were actually well into middle age.
Harleys were all the rage, though BSA, Ducati and Gilera were also showing the flag in this classical convention. The bikers had stopped for refreshments on their journey to Kilkenny and were entertained on the Square by Mullinahones answer to Aker Bill on the trumpet. On an historical note, this area of Mullinahone heard the notes of the trumpet and the sounds of Jazz long before they reached Dublin or even London.
Back in the mist of time, Miss Nora Redmond whose folk ran a hotel in Carrick Street, got the music from a friend in America. “Oh when the saints go marching on”.
