Mick Retires As Magazine Editor after 26 Years

E-mail Print PDF

Since it first appeared in 1982 to give a published account of the Kickham Centenary celebrations of that year the Mullinahone magazine has appeared each year to bring the news of Mullinahone to parishioners near and far. The 25th edition of the magazine was published in the rum up to Christmas 2007.For all of that time Michael Larkin has acted as editor of the publication.

In the early days of the parish magazine Mick was helped by a number of people, most notably John Costello and Michael White, now both sadly deceased. While Michael and John were both natives of Mullinahone, Mick Larkin is a native of Galway.

Mick first came to Mullinahone in the 1950’s and soon blended into the local landscape in more ways than one. It was probably to the benefit of Mullinahone magazine that its editor in chief should be and outsider. When it came to publishing, Mick was always able to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Since the deaths of both John Costello and Michael White the burden of the magazine on Mick has grown enormously. Our two locals were great collectors of information while Mick who has a historical bent is more inclined to see things that are documented. In more recent years Sheila Foley gave great encouragement in Mick in keeping the magazine going.

The only year that the Mullinahone magazine did not come out was in 2002, the year that Mick Larkin published his splendid history of the local area, Mullinahone: It’s Heritage and History. At recent meeting of Mullinahone community council it was announced that Mick Larkin is to step down as editor of the magazine. Many tributes were paid to Mick on his wonderful work over a quarter of a century.

The search now begins for a successor; almost a generation has passed since Mick first picked up the editor’s pen. The time has come to find an editor or group a generation younger than Mick to continue the valuable work of the last twenty five years.
