New Play – Most people in Mullinahone will be familiar with well know author Willie Egan. After al, Willie was born in Mullinahone in the 1950’s. Originally Willie was a well know song writer and progressed from this to writing a number of short sketches. Many of these were used by the locals in a number of successful forays into Scor Competitions in the 1980’s.

The author then branched into full length drama and two of his plays have been brought to stage by his native Anner Players. His first play was performed by the quasi auto-biographical “The winter of 69” which was performed to a receptive audience in Mullinahone and Kilkenny’s Watergate. A second successful play followed the same tracks as regards venues and cast “Dreams, Schemes and Miracles”.

Now Willie has produced his third play about family conflict and secrets and about personal values and choices. The action takes place during a Sunday lunchtime when the Darbys are preparing for a family dinner party to present their retirement. The arrival of a stranger opens the flood gates of confusion. Once again Willie places his play in the hands of the Anner players. The talented Mullinahone men are argumented by two dinner ladies neither of whom are a stranger to Kilkenny stage, Marina Boyd and Paula Drohan. The male side of the cast comes from “the little village” or at least from its environs. Kevin Keating plays the “about to retire” bank Manager Mr. Darby. The other stars are always entertaining Eugene O Meara, as well as regulars Paddy Hickey. The cast is completed by Padraig Collins who represents a new generation.

The Play will be unveiled in the Knocknagow community centre on January 11th and 12th before moving to the bigger stage of the Watergate the following weekend.
Proceeds in Mullinahone are in aid of the local community council. The play will be directed by Willie Egan and producer, stage design and stage manager is Tom Ryan, Michael Egan Costumes and Aoife Bambrick (make Up) Curtains up all nights at 8pm

It is Sunday lunchtime in the Darby household.
Ed Darby is a recently-retired successful Bank
Manager, much lauded by his peers at the previous
night’s retirement party. Along with his wife Anne
he awaits the arrival of their grown-up offspring.
Surely a Sunday family celebratory meal will be
the perfect beginning to his new life….or will it?

“Darby’s Castle” is a contemporary play about family conflict and secrets, the pursuit and price of “success”, and a bustrip to Tramore some 40 years previous.
