Recent events from troubled Kenya illustrate how immediate modern telecommunication makes ever far away events. During the week we were in contact with the Irish group who reached the South Pole. Before that we were brought up to date with the tumult and bloodshed in Kenya.

 

In the days leading up to Christmas, Johanna Sheehan of Ballydavid had a visit from her grandson Niall Sheehan, Borris, Co. Carlow. Niall is currently a student of planning in Edinburgh. He is also a promising long distance runner. Niall told his grandmother that he was off to a high altitude training camp in Kenya on St Stephen’s morning as part of a group of ex-Limerick University runners.

 

At the time Kenya was one of the most peaceful countries in Africa, shortly after Niall and his friends had settled into the training camp things began to flare up in Kenya. At the bottom of the mountain on which the training camp is sited is the city of Eldoret, where a church was burned with hundreds of people inside. It became necessary to evacuate the Irish runners. The lads got a bus down from the mountain to Eldoret airport, which was escorted by armed troops. They then got a flight from Nairobi to London. Niall and his friends are now back in Ireland.
