U21 Footballers win County final

E-mail Print PDF

In 1988 Mullinahone made history when they won the County U21B football title by beating Loughmore. Now twenty years later a new bunch of players have once again achieved this remarkable achievement by collecting the trophy for the second time last Saturday evening in a well attended Fethard.

The foundations for this win were laid at a club meeting last January when manager Sean O’Meara asked for the U21’s to be entered in the County senior league. The team played a number of games and while not winning them they showed remarkable commitment over the winter months to both these games and training to suggest they were going to be a force.

They built up a great team spirit together and encouraged each other through each training session and matches. All this preparation came to the fore against a fancied Rockwell Rovers team last Saturday night. Mullinahone were out of the blocks early in this game and were seven points clear with 25mins gone. With goalkeeper and back line in brilliant form aided by a dominant midfield the forwards were having a good supply of ball.

They duly made good use of possession with all six forwards showing for ball and working extremely hard. To Rockwells credit they threw everything at Mullinahone in the second half but this team were battle hardened and held on for a great win. All the players on this panel can be proud of their victory as they all gave great commitment all year.

This was acknowledged by Capt. Enda McEnery in his acceptance speech who was quick to praise his fellow players. The Manager Sean O’Meara has certainly kept faith with the U21 grade for many years and its nice to see his work rewarded. His selectors Alan Curran, Eugene O’Brien and Michael Scott also put in a big effort in preparation. Enjoy your victory lads and you can look forward now to the U21 hurling championship next weekend.
