Courageous Paul Curran looking for final fling

E-mail Print PDF

NEVER give up in sport, ever. You want evidence — just look to Tipperary’s Paul Curran, full-back for tomorrow’s All-Ireland semi-final against Waterford.
Paul Curran
But it could have been very different for the Mullinahone star.A few years ago Curran had had enough of warming the bench while big Philly Maher was an automatic in the number three shirt. College almost over, his bags were packed, he was headed for sunnier climes for the summer. National League final of 2003, first intervention.

“It was my last year in college and I had opted out of the panel. I had planned on going to America, Boston, I had the J1 visa.

“Then Phillip got injured, I was asked to come in to do a training session, but sure they knew once I came in there was no way I was going to America. From then on really...”From then on, the Mullinahone star has been an ever-present on the Tipp 15, or at least he was, until fate again intervened last year.

First, however, there was that 2003 All-Ireland semi-final against Kilkenny, wrong end of a 3-18 to 0-15 point beating.“I was full-back that day, I suppose we just weren’t battle-hardened. Even in our training games we weren’t geared up to it, not compared to this year where we have 33 lads all fighting, so that when the pressure came, we weren’t able for it.”

More
disappointment was to follow, including two Munster final losses to Cork, 2005 and 2006.
“It doesn’t be long going. Even if we had won either of those Munster finals though I don’t know would we have had the belief to beat Kilkenny. Cork had the set-up, Kilkenny had the set-up, but the turning point for Tipp was the 2002 All-Ireland semi-final, when we lost to Kilkenny (four points). Nicky English left, Tipp went down, but it would have been interesting to see what would have happened if he had stayed on.”

Corner-back when Maher made a brief return, Paul then made the full-back slot his own, as much at home there at the beginning of last year as Phillip had been in 2003, Declan Fanning now the frustrated one on the bench; then came that next intervention, early last year.

Junior B Football

Our junior footballers played the third round of their championship recently in Marlfield. The omens for Fr. Sheehy’s looked bad from the start as they struggled to field fifteen but to their credit they rounded up enough to start.

Mullinahone had no such problems as they picked from a panel of twenty one. We were out of the blocks from the start and with Noel Leahy in commanding form in midfield there was a good supply of ball to Shane Ahern at full forward who gave a master class in how to distribute ball at full forward.

While not scoring himself he assisted at leas 3-08 or our scores. As the first half progressed all of our forwards go in on the act and with a high work rate yielded some fine scores. The first half scores came from N. Leahy 0-2, I Gahan 0-1, B Tobin 1-01, A Doheny 0-02, D Croke, 0-03, J McGrath, 2-0 to leave the half time score Mullinahone 3-09 to no score

The second half saw the introduction of subs and they continued on where others left of. Scores from j Maher 0-2, N Leahy 0-01, A Doheny 1-1, D Croke 1-0, L Needham 0-02, R Cahill 0-02 left the full time score Mullinahone 6-14, Fr Sheehy’s 0-1.

The panel used on the night gave their all and showed that competition for places is high. In the backs Sean O Meara, C O Shea, B O Sullivan, N Mullally, J Maher and mark O Brien played well as a unit.

Huge Game Coming Up for Hurlers

E-mail Print PDF

On the week that former Mullinahone player Paul Kelly is to rejoin the Tipperary senior hurling panel recent results have decreed that Mullinahone face a huge hurling game on Sunday next.

Last weekend they played Ballingarry in Fethard in the league section of the South Tipp senior hurling championship. Earlier league results meant that Mullinahone had qualified for the semi-finals but Ballingarry had not. In last weekends game Ballingarry came from behind to beat Mullinahone by four points to win a semi-final place. Now on Sunday both sides must meet again in Kilsheelin in the South Tipp semi-final.

This time the game is knockout, with the winners advancing to the South Tipp final, which will be played at a later date. If Mullinahone fail to win it will be the third year in a row that they have failed to reach the South Tipp final, a far cry from the heady heights that the club reached in 2002. With the club supplying two of the better players to the Tipperary hurling team it is important to arrest the clubs downward spiral.

This year to reach the semi-final we have defeated Swan now out of the county and south championships and Ballybacon/Grange up this year from intermediate ranks. We have lost to local rivals Killenaule (the south champions) and Ballingarry.

Since we became seniors in 1992 we have not failed to reach the divisional final three years in a row. It is hoped that we be at full strength for next Sunday’s semi-final, but injuries to both Paul Curran and Pat Croke are a worry. While some of our elder warriors seem to be waning, our supporters will be hoping that the younger guns will step up to the mark. Defeat on Sunday will also see us fall into the county qualifiers where we would join a number of very prominent teams who have been eliminated from their own championships.

Sunday’s game is also about local pride and supporters will be hoping that they will have a team to talk about rather than successful individuals. Hopefully the attention given to our senior hurling team will bear fruit. Supporters are asked to come out in numbers and get behind the team. Definitely the pressure is building.

Paul Curran yet to discover extent of injury

Tipperary's Paul Curran is yet to find out how serious the injury that he picked up in the Munster SHC Final win over Clare is and when he might be able to return.

The determined full-back was forced off just before the half-time break after colliding with Clare forward Mark Flaherty and damaging his shoulder.Paul Curran Mullinahone

While there were initial concerns that he might have suffered a similar injury to that of team-mates Hugh Maloney and Conor O'Mahony, he has revealed that it is already improving.

The Mullinahone clubman will have to be assessed by team physio John Casey and he will be hoping for a positive outcome as The Premier County maintain their assault on the Liam McCarthy Cup.

"I tried to catch a ball after that and dropped it," explained Curran.

"I didn't have full movement in my shoulder which was a hindrance. I couldn't risk staying on.

"I had it in a sling on Sunday night but that was more to stop lads hitting me.

"It's certainly not as bad as the problems that Hugh and Conor had had. Even now, I'm getting movement back in it and it's improving all the time."

Senior Hurling

Our senior hurlers have qualified for the south senior hurling championship with a hurlinggood win over a very determined Carrick Swan. This year’s championship has proved to be very competitive between all the clubs so it was very important that the players worked hard to get results. This they did on Sunday and in the end were worthy winners. Well done to all involved.

We wish a speedy recovery to Alan Curran who fractured his wrist in the recent Killenaule game.

Junior B Hurling

Our junior hurlers played their first game of the championship against Ballybacon last Thursday in Ned Hall Park. Our junior team has a mix of the young and the experienced and has a strong emphasis on enjoying their hurling. It’s great to see twenty four of a panel available for games.

Mullinahone started strongly and went into an early lead. With a good supply of ball to the forwards they were availing of their many scoring opportunities. The half time score read 2-12 to Ballybacon 1-6. The second half saw Mullinahone add some fine scores with some great team work and saw a very committed performance from all the panel used.

The full time score read Mullinahone 3-20, Ballybacon 1-6. The score did not reflect the efforts of Ballybacon throughout the game as the team work of Mullinahone on the night proved to the difference.

The panel on the night was: A Walsh, C Hogan, S. O Meara, A. Lonergan, N O Shea, Ed O Brien (Capt.) D Croke, J Maher, N O Brien, N Cronin, J Maher, M O Brien, M Hicks, M Luttrell, A Doheny, T McNamara, N Mullally, C O Shea, R Cahill.

Senior Hurling

Our seniors played their second game of the championship against Killenaule last Saturday in Fethard. With Killenaule missing players with injury this was an opportunity to add two more points to our league table. Killenaule led the scoring in the first half and little separated the teams at half time.

Mullinahone got the dream start in the second half with Pat Croke gaoling twice to open up a five point lead. You’d expect us to drive on and win but it was Killenaule who upped the tempo to win by a point. Mullinahone now go into next weekend looking for a win against Swans who seem to be getting stronger as the championship progresses.

As for ourselves we certainly need to up a gear to maintain our interest in the current championship. We certainly have the quality and I have no doubt when these players are asked they will respond. Best of luck lads on Sunday.
