The death took place recently following an illness of one of Mullinahone's best known elderly ladies. Mary Moher of Ballydavid, passed away in St. Brigid's Hospital, Carrick on Suir.
She was in her 87th year. She hadn't been in top class health for some time but she didn't become seriously unwell until early this year. Mary Moher was a native of Ballingarry but came to Mullinahone in the early 1940's. She was well over sixty years among us. She was the second last member of her own Lyons family to pass away. In the middle 1940's, Mary married the late Thomas Moher of Ballydavid where the pair settled down in the family home and reared their family of eight girls and two boys. It is as a family woman that Mary Moher will be best remembered. She was a religious woman and the rosary was said each night in Ballydavid. Visitors to the house had no option but to join in. Mary and Thomas were almost totally absorbed in family affairs and took little part in activities outside the family.
They were both always helpful neighbours. In later years, Mary became a member of the Knocknagow Social Club and was a regular attender of it's get together? As her children grew up and the family expanded, Mary became interested in all her extended family. She was the mother/grandmother in the old manner without ever becoming totally set in her ideas. Her remains were brought back to Ballydavid where a Mass for family, neighbours and friends was said. Mary was then moved to St. MIchael's Church in Mullinahone where she reposed. Her funeral obsequies were attended by Fr. McGrath P.P. Mullinahone, Fr. Gear C.C. Grangemockler and Fr. Cunningham P.P., Ballyneale. The funeral pall was placed on her coffin by her two sons John and Gerard. The readings at her funeral were read by her grandchildren, Gerard Kiely and Barry Hanrahan. Prayers of the faithful were recited by grandchildren Sean Moher, Jason Higgins, Brian Brady, Denis Hanrahan, Susan Murray and great grandchild Chloe McGuire.
The offertory gifts were presented by Mary's daughters Alice, Breda and Rita and her sons John and Gerard. Mary's Mass was served by Alison Brett a neighbour and grand-daughter of Mary Moher's driver to regular morning mass, Mary Brett. Mary's funeral was extremely well-attended. After Mass, Mary's remains were taken to Grangemockler for burial beside her husband Thomas. We offer our condolences to Mary's family Alice, Breda, Rita, Ann, Catherine, Marie, John, Teresa, Gerard and Carmel. Our sympathy too to Mary's brother Sean Lyons. To all of the above and to their extended families, we tender our regrets. May the soul of Mary Moher rest in peace. She belonged to a time when family values were a way of life.
Dust Settling
Voters in Mullinahone are in general well pleased with the results of the local elections held on Friday. Turnout at the three polling stations in the parish was more or less equivalent to the turnout in 2004. When the results became known, it was apparent that three of the six candidates elected lived within a radius of six miles of the village of Mullinahone. The trio are the Fine Gael duo of Jimmy O'Brien and Joe Brennan and Mullinahone Independent Eddie O'Meara. Overall, this is a highly satisfactory result for our part of the country. Our congratulations to Jimmy and Joe who were being elected at the polls for the first time, to Eddie who was entering the winners enclosure for the third time, to all the other winners and to all the other candidates who were brave enough to put themselves before the electorate.
The campaign was short and intense. That brings us to the matter of the big clean up. I believe that all the candidates have seven days to remove all those fine posters from poles etc. Some have already done so and I'm sure the others will follow the good example. Perhaps, if some of the posters are from candidates far away on the European Election, some of the local teams might even help them out. Like the schoolchildren in September, it is now back to work for all our councillors. Our problems haven't gone away during the campaign.

Get used to it
Make sure that when you are using a Mullinahone landline phone number to put the digits 91 before the old five digit number. It is progress when we go from five digits to seven. Maybe it is a sign that broadband is coming.
