Bargains and Memories at Auction
Were there bargains there? Of course there were but you will have to hear about them from those who got them or those who just missed them. Standing inside the doorway of the auction room revived memories but dreams of times past were shattered by the sound of auctioneer John Quirke's hammer coming down on yet another bargain. John did well in one of his first public appearances in Mullinahone.

There was quite a large turnout in unfavourable conditions so indications are that we will have more auctions on a regular basis.

Certainly "Briens Hall" never had as good a sound system as the one used on Sunday evening so there was no need to ask your neighbour "what did he say?" For the benefit of the younger generation and those more recently arrived in Mullinahone "Briens Hall" as it was called is situated out at the back of "Quirke's yard" which was formerly Cahill's and prior to that Briens.

Across the world – Well done to the pupils of Poulacapple National School and their teachers. In the townships of South Africa it takes only €12 to educate one of the children. On the Late Late Show recently we saw the builders who travel to South Africa to erect houses in these townships. One of these builders, Larry Cody from Ballyhale, visited Poulacapple School to explain this work to the boys and girls. He made a big impression on both children and teachers who decided that they would try to raise funds for this project. The effort was spearheaded by school principal Mary Meagher with assistance from Fr McGrath. They twinned with a school in a Capetown township and raised over €700. The money was raised through a "no home work, no uniform" day in the school.

The thirty-five families involved in the school all got stuck in and the end result is that sixty children in Capetown will benefit. It is hoped to set up an internet link between Poulacapple and their South-African cousins. A cheque was presented to Larry the builder (not Bob) for transportation to South Africa. Well done to all concerned as Poulacapple stretches the hand of friendship across the world.

U-21 hurling – Just as our under-21 hurlers were setting off for Littleton on Saturday, word came that the match had been called off. This was because the pitch was unplayable. The other county semi-final did go ahead in Newport with Templederry defeating Cappawhite by 0-10 to 0-4. Templederry now await either ourselves or Upperchurch in the final. Our refixed semi-final could take place this weekend but an intermediate football semi-final is also possible.

Intermediate football – The County Intermediate Football championship advanced a half a step over the weekend. We, along with Moyne, have qualified for the semi-final. Newport were to play Cashel in a quarter-final on Saturday, but this was postponed to Monday because of weather. The game then ended in a draw so a replay is needed. In the other quarter-final, Knockavilla defeated Ballina.

Niall plays – Niall Curran was dually called on Sunday. Selected to play with Tipperary hurlers against Dublin, Niall was also invited to travel to Crossmaglen with Munster footballers to play Ulster. Niall lined out at right full back with the footballers even if it was in vain as Ulster won. Both Currans, Niall and Paul, now have the distinction of representing Munster in football and hurling in the full-back line against Ulster in the same year.

Lotto – The local lotto draw took place on Monday, October 24. The winning numbers were 11, 12, 21 and 28. We had no jackpot winner but Anne Marie Murphy won the match three prize of e150. Congratulations Anne Marie. The next draw is on Monday, November 7 and the jackpot will be €1300

Breakfast on Pluto – The film Breakfast On Pluto, much of which was shot around Callan, is being released in the USA this month. The film will be released in Ireland early in the New Year. Previews of the film are said to be very favourable. The film itself is set in Ireland of the 1960s.

Health Centre – First reports back concerning our new health centre with its bright airy spacious hall and waiting room, are very favourable. The fact that doctors, nurses and community welfare officers are well separated is also popular. The visiting person's room is not fully booked up as yet but a range of medical services is expected to be provided in the long term. Next week, we hope to provide readers with the separate telephone numbers of the doctor, the nurse and the community welfare officer. We also hope to be able to provide readers with the new proposed income guidelines for medical cards as recently issued. Traffic congestion in Kickham Street has eased considerably since the new health centre opened.
first friday – Masses on Friday in St Michael's Church at 10am and 8pm. Confessions before and after each Mass. Usual house calls on Friday.

Michael Saunders – The death took place recently most unexpectedly in Coolagh of Michael (Mick) Saunders. Mick was a frequent visitor to his relatives in Mullinahone (O'Shea's of Kilvemon). He was also well known to others in Mullinahone because of his work in the Coolagh Pattern. He was a great community worker and will be sadly missed. Sympathy went to his family. May he rest in peace.

At Mick's funeral Mass in Coolagh, words of appreciation were spoken by Mick's friend and neighbour, Billy Maher, a native of Ballycullen, Mullinahone.

Choir – The next gathering of St Michael's choir will be at Saturday evening Mass, November 5. All members are requested to attend. It is hoped to have a carol service in December. Any person who would like to be part of it is welcome to attend rehearsals on November 8.

Christmas Child – Last Christmas, over seven million shoe boxes of presents were sent to orphanages, street shelters, hospitals, and poor families through "Operation Christmas Child" in almost 100 countries. To make your contribution please pick up a leaflet from Martina in the Castle View Bar. This leaflet is needed to process the gift. Boxes must be back with Martina by November 8. Your help is really needed.

Sports Quiz – The juvenile GAA club will hold a sports table quiz on Thursday, November 10 in Mac's Lounge at 9.30pm sharp. Teams of 4, €20. 1st prize Perpetual Cup and cash; 2nd prize cash. Enjoyable night so come along and support the club.
