South Tipp Represented in Rome:-

When the O'Connor and McGrath families made their preparations for a nice family wedding in Rime they little thought that they would be catapulted into the turmoil of a papal funeral. However man proposes but God disposes as the old saying goes and a higher authority decreed that two South Tipp families were to be united in the blaze of publicity that was Rome last week following the death of the revered pontiff Pope John Paul II.

 

As the McGraths from Clonmel flew into Rome on Saturday afternoon the pontiff was still alive. By the time that the O'Connors joined them on Sunday Pope John Paul was dead. Of course both families worried that this event of world shattering importance would affect their big day but it didn't but it did cause thier stay in a frenetic city to be even more so. On the Tuesday of last week Mary O'Connor daughter of Seamie and Tess O'Connor, Ballydonnell married Eoin McGrath son of Declan and Joanne McGrath of Tobbera, Clonmel. the wedding was attended by all members of both families including both sets of parents.

The ceremony took place in St Patricks, the Irish church in Rome. The celebrant was Fr Michael Brannock who also helped in making the wedding arrangements. Wedding vows were exchanged under a huge mosaic over the altar in which St Patrick is the principal figure. Bridesmaid and one of the witnesses at the ceremony was Vera O'Connor while the grooms bother Connor McGrath was Bestman and also a witness. After the wedding celebrations some members of the wedding party queued for up to 18 hours to file past and pay thier respects to the late pontiff who was lying in state in St Peters. Everybodys wedding is memorable but for Mary and Eoin thier wedding day in St Patricks in Rome will always be extra special. Both the newly weds are employed in Guidant in Clonmel.

 

They have since returned from Rome and have taken up residence in their home in Chestnut Drive in Clonmel. We wish them many years of wedded bliss together. Your wedding day will always be one of the highlights in the travels of both your families especially as this family event became caught up in international events. South Tipperary was well represented in the Eternal City the week of the Papal funeral.

Soccer News:-

Mullinahone youth are aiming for a 2 in a row win in the South Tipp League this year. On Saturday next in Moyglass they play the first leg of a home and away tie against Moyglass. The second leg has been arranged for Mullinahone the following Saturday. The team has been prepared under the watchful eyes of Tommy Forristal and James Carroll. We wish the lads the very best of luck.

Table Quiz:-

A table quiz takes place in Macs on Thursday April 21st at 9.30pm. This quiz is a fund raiser for the local soccer club. Your support is requested.

Darts Club:-

A Darts Club has recently been formed in the Castle View Bar in Mullinahone. Officers elected to direct the club were: Chairman Paddy Hickey; Secretary Thomas Gahan; Treasurer Rodger Quirke and Public Relations Officer Claire Fogarty. Darts are held each Friday night starting at 9.30pm. A shanghai game will be starting soon. If the jackpot is not won it will be carried forward on a weekly basis. Non members are welcome to the darts.

Local Lotto:-

The draw took place on Monday April 4th. The winning numbers were 3, 5, 6 and 18. The jackpot was not won and four winners shared a match 3 prize of EU160. The jackpot on Monday night next could reach EU3250.

Bad Day:-

Sunday last was a bad day at the office in Semple Stadium for Mullinahone hurlers. In spite of starting with three Mullinahone players on the team, Tipps team went down to Clare in the first phase 2 game of the National League. Even a late rally was not enough to save the day. Hard luck to Paul Kelly, Eoin Kelly and Paul Curran. In the curtain raiser although leading by three points with very little time to go Tipperary conceded a late goals to Cork in the vocational schools final and so Kevin Bolger who lined out at left half forward failed in his quest to match the achievement of his uncle Gerry Bolger who was a member of the Tipp panel which won that title back in 1990.

Confirmation Day:-

Confirmation Day will take place in St Michaels Church, Mullinahone on Wednesday next April 20th. In preparation a special ceremony of Light was held in St Michaels on Sunday evening last April 10th. Our local church choir has also been preparing diligently for Confirmation Day. A special mass will include the Confirmation ceremony at 11am on Wednesday next.

No Medals:-

Hard luck recently to Liza O'Halloran and Eva Roundtree. Both are members of the local ladies football club. Both were squad members of the Kilkenny team which narrowly lost the All-Ireland Under 16 B Ladies Football Final against Offaly when the game was played some weeks ago.

Scoil Mhuire:-

Kilvemnon N.S. have collected more than EU540 for National Muc Day in aid of Childrens Hospice Care. The Irish Hospice Foundation is a non-profit organisation that promotes the hospice philosophy and supports the development of hospice care. Their vision is that no-one should have to face death without appropriate care including support for the family and extending into bereavement. The money raised by the school will ensure the development of childrens hospice care.

Golf Society:-

The next outing of the golf society is on next SAturday April 16th. The venue is Rathdowney Golf Club Co. Laois. The members will be playing for the Killaghy Cup. tee off times are from 12 noon to 1pm.

Development:-

A number of planning applications have been lodged for developments in the vicinity of the village. All interested parties should examine these projects which are on public display at the Co. Council offices. This is in thier own interest as each person is responsible for what the developments mean to them. Completion of all the proposals would certainly mean a very changed village from the one we know.
