Disappointing Weekend for Supporters:-
Last weekend was a disappointing one for the supporters of Mullinahone GAA club. On Saturday our under 21 footballers were knocked out of the South Tipp U21"B" championship. Sean O'Mearas team went down 0-11 to 0-5 to Brian Borus in Fethard. In this clash of losers of the previous weekend we lost so we failed to avail of our second chance and are eliminated from the championship. Brian Borus are a combination team drawn from the Fr Sheehy's and Ballylooby / Castlegrace clubs. We started poorly on Saturday and while we rallied a couple of times we failed to sustain these rallies and in the end we faded out of the game. Our inability to win control in any of the principal positions certainly contributed to our defeat. Supporters looking for talent to move up to our intermediate football team to make it competitive this year will not have been heartened. The team which lined out on Saturday last showed only minimal change from the previous week. We were represented by Joseph O'Meara, Richie Neary, John Skehan, Michael O'Brien, Andy Lonergan, Niall Doheny, Joseph Maher, Alan Curran, Shane O'Brien, Adrian Doheny, Ian Gahan, Mark O'Brien, Stephen O'Brien, Kevin Bolger and Ned Tobin. Subs used were A O'Brien, J Murphy, P Hally, D Hennessy and P Treacy. In the two games lost a total of twenty three players were used to the selectors did cast their net fairly wide.
On Sunday afternoon our senior hurlers took to the field for their first outing of the year. This was a league game against "The Combo" (Golden / Anacarty). We began brightly in this game played in Mullinahone but in the end we faded and lost by a point 1-14 to 2-10. Our team was certainly on the weak side and interest focussed on those who might be about to move up into senior ranks and challenge for a place on a championship 15. We began Ned Tobin, Shane O'Brien, Martin Costello, Dan Croke, Kyran Vaughan, Edward O'Brien, Alan Curran, Eddie Carey, Pat Croke, Kevin Bolger, Brian O'Meara, Adrian Maher, Edwin O'Meara, Vinnie Doheny, Stephen O'Brien. When Philip O'Shea joined the game early in the first half the count of those who started the 2002 county final stood at seven. The two remaining league games against Toome and Nenagh will certainly flush out any talent which we may have down the line and of course fitness will improve once serious training gets under way. the straight route (via the South Championship) would seem to be our best chance of progress this year in the county championship. While we will be seeking a fourth South Championship in a row we would do well to remember that Killenaule have won two county under 21's in a row, Ballingarry have won a Munster senior hurling league title this year and Swan have reappeared in the last two county minor "A" finals winning the last one. Plenty of pitfalls among that lot for the unwary.

Interest From Afar:-
Recently a letter arrived for the local correspondent from St Augustine in Florida USA. Thomas Collins from St Augustine had been going through Internet versions of a local newspaper and had come across references to the article "Tragedy at Killaghy" in the 2004 / 2005 edition of the Mullinahone Magazine in the Mullinahone Notes. the author of the letter had a grand uncle who married a Nora Dillion in New York in 1899. Nora Dillon was one of the family who emigrated to the USA following the tragic events involving her family in Killaghy Castle in 1888. Thomas Collins had read up many of the details of this famous murder trial of the 19th century on the Mullinahone website (mullinahone-parish.com). He was also put in contact with another descendant of the Dillon family also in the US who had contacted the guest book on the website. This case illustrates the marvels of modern technology. People can be separated by thousands of mile and generations of people and yet photos, documents and general information can be transmitted by fax or e-mail in milliseconds across the world. On the home from parishioners should examine the local website. Sometimes a query appears from some person seeking information and the only link is the name "Mullinahone". Maybe you could be the one to help them out. Some parish groups make a practice of meeting in such far away places as New York, Sydney or even London on a regular basis to discuss local news. They are as up to date as the people who gather outside the church after mass, such is the wonder of modern communication.

Repairs are to be carried out to the Carrigmoclear '98 memorial and the route leading to it. To raise funds for the purpose a general knowledge Table Quiz will take place in Nonies of Ninemilehouse on Friday March 18th at 9.45pm.
"The Cripple":-
Locals may be interested in a forthcoming play The Cripple of Inishmaan. This play is being produced by the Fionn Mac Cumhaill Players this coming weekend in Cloneen on March 10th - 12th. Prominent in the play are local actors Eugene O'Meara and Eddie Duggan (Seni0r). Taking the lead role and looking very well on local posters is Davy O'Meara (Fennane) son of Eugene and Carmel O'Meara. No booking required but you are advised to come early.
Fitzgibbon medals:-
While Eoin Kelly may have grabbed all the Fitzgibbon Cup (hurling) headlines over the weekend it was a case of two Fitzgibbon Cup medals for Mullinahone. while Eoin dragged L.I.T. To victory as the Aertel Headlines said, he was joined on the winning panel by his friend Philip O'Shea of Kilvemnon. Philip is reported to have come on as a sub in the semifinal against Galway. Eoin was in great scoring form against both Galway (semifinal) and University of Limerick in the final. The event was hosted by L.I.T. and Eoins team would not even have got to the final stages without a last gasp winning goal from him in the quarter final against C.I.T. Eoin and Philip join the meagre Fitzgibbon winners ranks fo Mullinahone men Jim O'Neill (UCD), Brian O'Meara (WIT) and Paul Curran (WIT). There may be more but I cannot recall them at the moment. The Fitzgibbon Cup is the premier hurling competition for 3rd level colleges and has been played for since 1912.
