Senior citizens welcome Jan

A senior citizens party to welcome in 2004 will be held in Knocknagow Centre on Sunday, 2pm.

Gifts or donations towards the party will be gratefully accepted by the ICA.

Underage GAA – The AGM of the juvenile section of the GAA club is on January 30.
The club needs reliable people to help in looking after hurling and football teams at under-16, 14, 12 and 10 level.

Chiropodist – The chiropodist will make her first monthly visit of 2004 to the community centre on Monday.

Kilkenny bus – Since before Christmas there have been changes in the local bus service from Mullinahone to Kilkenny. This is a weekday service.
The bus now leaves Mullinahone each day at 9.25am and 1.20pm. The journey takes about 40 minutes.
There is a return service at 11.30am and 5.30pm.

Quiz – Arrangements are in hand to hold the local heat of the Credit Unions' National Primary Schools' Quiz in February.
Teams will consist of four people. There will be under-11 and 13 sections. the local heat will be open to teams from the primary schools in the Credit Union common bond area.
These are Mohober NS, Drangan NS, Cloneen NS, Mullinahone NS, Poulacapple NS and Kilvemnon NS.
Local winners represent the Credit Union in the chapter final in the Spring.

Lotto – The local lotto jackpot was not won. Four shared a match three prize of e160. Aine Brett, Gemma Dunne, Mebh Maher and Paul O'Brien.
Jackpot on Monday is expected to be e4,800.
Sunshine Club – Members of the Sunshine Club (female) have completed plans for an early spring sunshine holiday.

Going back – Looking back on 2003 we note that issue 46 of the parish newsletter appeared on May 3. It contained details that First Communion would take place in the parish on May 24.
The Gun Club published the results of their Easter Raffle and a race night in aid of the Special Olympics was held for May 9.
The under-12 girls scored a great win over Ardfinnan in a Community Games tie. The next week brought news that a sponsored walk was taking place in support of Mary O'Brien and Sinead Maher who were planning on spending two months teaching in Uganda and Zimbabwe.
Local hurlers Donal Cody and Shane O'Brien were part of the South Tipp under-16 hurling team that won the Munster under-16 'B' championship in Mitchelstown.
Michaela Reilly and Niall Brennan qualified for a trip to Mosney by winning in the Tipperary Community Games art county finals.
Timmy O'Connor was congratulated on completing a sponsored run in aid of minor development. About e1,200 of the monies raised are still in GAA coffers.
The under-16 footballers were beaten in the South Tipp semi-final by Killenaule. A Tipp FM recording of “Down Your Way: was held in Quirkes on May 21 while the GAA held a public meeting to assess community support for their lotto sportshall cum activity centre.
During the next week 24 children received First Communion in St Michael's Church on May 24.

Kevin Maher, formerly of Newlands, died in New York.

Josie O'Keeffe presented a cheque on behalf of the community to St Patrick's Special School, Kilkenny.
Special Olympic fever was in the air. The last week of May saw Trocaire acknowledging e3,200 from local people.
In Community Games a team representing Mullinahone won the county indoor soccer under-13 championship while the under-12 girls had a great win in the county final, beating Moycarkey-Borris.
Tom Ryan was anxious to update the “Panic Button” home security system. His phone number is 052-54608. The next issue, June 14, was number 52. How quickly a year had flown.
Paul Meehan continued to publish a fine newsletter. On the GAA front Victor Direen reported that one third of the Tipperary senior hurling team against Laois were Mullinahone players.
Congratulations went to Paul Curran, Paul Kelly, Denis Byrne, Eoin Kelly and team captain Brian O'Meara.
The New Year brought a new format. The letter wished luck to Linda O'Keeffe in the Special Olympics and t0 Gerald Dalton and Berna on their wedding in Mullinahone and celebration in Turkey.

A local committee was formed to restore Modeshill graveyard while the ladies club were planning their Summer outing to County Wexford. The under-14 footballers sprang a surprise when beating Moyle Rovers in the South Tipp semi-final. After a brave effort they went down to Commercials in the final. The underage club had visitors at under-12 and under-10 level from Cappataggle, County Galway.
Thanks to Nellie Gahan the mystery of Fethard Street in Republican minded days was solved. People tried to change the name Fethard Street to John Mitchell Street after the 1848 patriot and writer.
That day was also very special as Linda O'Keeffe of Mullinoly became Mullinahone's first Olympian.

Golf – Preparations are in hand for the big local golf outing on Saturday in Carrick-on-Suir. Tee off times and pairings have been arranged but because of numbers taking part it is important that times be adhered to.
All who have entered are asked to contact the local organisers and get their tee times.
The course is booked from 10am to 12.30pm. The turnout for this memorial competition has been enormous with almost all members of the local society and their friends anxious to play for the local side in the challenge for the Jack Brett memorial trophy.
The competition will be a memorial to deceased members of the local society and is expected to be an annual event.

Ladies football – The local ladies Football Club hold their AGM on January 30 in the Sportsfield Pavilion. All underage and junior players are being asked to attend. New members interested in playing are also welcome.
