WHAT is happening to Callan? Permission for Tesco's refused, closure of SFL and Duggan Steel in recent times, allowing a piggery to be developed despite 60 objections being lodged against the development and now with the population increasing there is no butcher shop left in Callan.
Rising charges and high rents seem to be the contributing factor for the recent closures which is a terrible shame. The nearest butcher shop to Callan is now O’Brien’s in Mullinahone, which does a thriving business serving quality meats. It makes one wonder why the butchers in a much larger populated area like Callan could not be successful while a butcher shop is able to thrive in a smaller populated area like Mullinahone. The said same butcher also has a very successful shop in Drangan so there has to be an opening for a good butcher’s shop in Callan, perhaps Mr O’Brien might decide to extend his empire over the boarder into Callan where he would be made most welcome.
Meat can still be bought at the local supermarket but for traditionalists it is not the same. People like the banter and to be able to dictate the type of cut they want. Sadly for now the traditional butcher shop is no more in Callan and this certainly cannot be blamed onTesco because for the decentring voices out there they haven’t arrived just yet!
