Late Peggy O Brien

E-mail Print PDF

The death took place recently of a lady well known and highly respected in the Mullinahone area. I refer to the late Peggy O Brien of Ballyhomuck, Cloneen, who passed away in her 90th years.Peggy, as she was known, was the mother and grandmother of our butchers, Ned and Edward

She had been in good health until she began to go downhill in the aftermath of Christmas. Peggy would be well known and highly respected by the older local residents. Some years ago she made a huge impression when she appeared on RTE documentary concerning “The Burning of Bridget Cleary”, an event which took place in 1895, about the generation before the late Peggy O Brien was born.

Peggy’s remains reposed at her own home where they were visited by a huge numbers of mourners. At her funeral Mass it was stated that Peggy who was no stranger to tragedy in her life had been much longer been a widow than a wife.

On the sudden death of her husband, she had continued on the family farm and also reared her family. Again tragedy struck Peggy was again bereaved by the death of her daughter Rena Beecher in an accident and the sudden death of her son, Michael O Brien, MCC, after he had been elected to his first term as a county councillor.

Peggy responded with great courage to these tragic events.

Clergy who officiated at her funeral Mass and obsequies were Fr Lambe, P.P, Drangan/ Cloneen, Canon Ryan, P.P, Killenaule, Fr Breen, P.P, Ballingarry.

The readings at the Mass were given by Peggy’s grandchildren.

She was laid to rest in the cemetery adjoining Cloneen Parish Church, again in the presence of a huge congregation.

To her sons, daughters, grandchildren, relatives and friends we extend our sympathy.

Pay the soul of Peggy O Brien, a lady who never grew old, rest in peace.

Ni Fheicfimid a leitheid ann aris.

"And I wouldn't much care for Sierra Leone, If I hadn't seen Killenaule
And the man that was never in Mullinahone,
Shouldn't say he had travelled at all."
