Patrick was both kind and helpful Dec 17th

E-mail Print PDF

The local community were both dismayed and surprised recently to learn of the death of Patrick O Brien of Tinakelly. Patrick, who was born and lived just outside the border or our parish, was as well known un Mullinahone as in his native parish. For many years Patrick attended religious ceremonies in St Michael’s Church along with his late wife, the former Mary Cody.

Patrick’s death which was most unexpected took place in South Tipperary Hospital, Clonmel. He was in his 83rd year which came as a surprise to many who were used to seeing him travel around the area, be it in van or car. Patrick was a great man to visit people and have time to talk to them, he was also a most helpful neighbour and over the years he was most obliging in carrying out a myrid of little household tasks for others. Patrick saw many people getting older but never thought of himself in that light. During his working life at one stage he had a mobile shop and also he spent many years in the building industry.

His remains were removed to Brett’s Funeral Home in Mullinahone where they reposed. They were then removed to St. Michael’s Church, Mullinahone, which he had attended so often. His funeral Mass was said by Fr Lambe PP, Mullinahone. The readers at his funeral Mass were his grandnieces Natasha O Brien and Tracy O Callaghan. The prayers of the faithful were recited by his grandnieces, Tina, Michelle, Elaine and Pauline.

After Mass Patrick’s remains removed to Cloneen for burial. Here he was interred with his late wife Mary who passed away early in 1996. Patrick’s removal, funeral Mass and burial were all well attended, proof indeed of the esteem in which he was held by all and sundry. He his survived by an older brother Jimmy in Harlow, England, and by two sisters Mary and Phyllis. It was only in more recent years that Patrick met his sister Mary whom he hadn’t med for over fifty years, though they had kept in regular contact. Patrick is survived by his brother in law Peter Cody,

Mullinahone and by his sister in law Peg O Brien, Cloneen as well as a host of nephews and nieces and other family members. Two extended family members of whom Patrick was very proud were the late Peter Ward and the late Willie O Brien, who were both shot within a very short time of each other while serving with UN Forces in the Lebanon. Patrick will be missed for his kindness, his quiet conversation, his helpfulness and his ability to trace both people and events.

His month’s mind Mass will be celebrated in St Michael’s church, Mullinahone, on January 6th 2008, the same day as the anniversary Mass of his late wife Mary.

May Patrick’s soul rest in peace.

Credit Union AGM

About forty members attended the AGM of Mullinahone Credit Union in Knocknagow Centre, Mullinahone on Wednesday night last. The report of the board of directors presented to the meeting told of further progress during the last year. Three members were elected to the board of directors to serve three year terms.

Congratulations to Marie Cuddihy, Knockroe, Drangan, John Skehan, Kickham St, Mullinahone and Tommy Rochford, Fethard St, Mullinahone. Following the AGM the following officers were elected for the coming year: chairperson, Margaret Kennedy, Clonagoose; secretary, Eleanor Quirke, Gurteen; treasurer: Tommy Rochford, Fethard St. Committee: Magaret Morris, Marie Cuddihy, John Skehan and Geraldine Kelly. The auditor elected on behalf of the members for the coming year was Jamie O Hanlon.

The three people to serve as the supervisory committee again on behalf of the members for the next year were Rita Curran, Kilvemnon, Ann Needham, Ballinacloghy and Miriam Slattery, Ballyduggan. The usual draw took place among the members present. The principal winners were: Hamper, Breda Keating; thirty euro each: Annie Hickey, Breda Rochford, Margaret Skehan and Nellie Bolger. Well done to all. As Christmas falls on a Tuesday this year it is unlikely to affect opening hours in the Credit Union on Thursday and Friday nights, December 20th, 21st,27th and 28th.

Mullinahone Net

The new Mullinahone website which can be found on the internet at Mullinahone.net is up and running. During the month of November, the site had 562 visits. This represents nearly 19 visits every day. While about 60% of the visits were from around Ireland another 30 % were from the United States and United Kingdom. The remaining 10% came from 12 other countries.

You can extend the range of communication by sending the address of the website to family members, friends or extended family members overseas. Just imagine someone in China being able to read the up to date Mullinahone notes on a Thursday afternoon or even earlier in the week. Well done to John Quirke on getting the site up and running.

CJ Kickhams AGM

The Agm of the CJ Kickhams GAA club hich was fixed to take place last weekend will now take place on Saturday at 8.30pm. After the AGM the club will have a new chairman. At the close of nomilated for the position of chairman. The two are John Croke, Jamestown and Jackie Bolger, Poulacapple, who is the current PRO of the club for much of the last ten years.

Nominated for the position of runai is Martin Cody. Martin served for seven years as runai of the juvenile club. The curent runai Oliver Vaughan has indicated both last year and this year that he wished to step down from the role. 2007 wasn’t a very successful year on the playing fields for Mullinahone’s adult footballers and hurlers. In the centenary year of the South Board, Mullinahone didn’t reach a football or hurling final at minor, under 21 junior or senior level. This was a pity in such a historic year so we all hope for better results in 2008.

Local Lotto

The local lotto jackpot was not won on Monday night last, December 10th. The winning number drawn were: 8, 16, 24 and 27. We did have two winners who shared the match 3 prize of €150.

Congratulations to Eddie and Frances and to Rose Grant, who came out of the hat in the draw for Christmas meat vouchers.

The two who shared last weeks match three draw were Carmel Gahan and Pat Webster.

Congratulations to them also. Next draw will be on Christmas Eve, December 24th, when the jackpot would be €4,400. Remember if you are not in you can’t win.

Modern Communication

To illustrate just how far modern telecommunication has come, I hear of three cousins who were having a chat on the phone lately. One of the three was in Edinburgh, another in Sydney and the third in Cork. The three could also see each other as they talked and as the conversation was via computers over the internet it was only charged at local phone rates. However, such service needs broadband so Mullinahone will have to be left out of that sort of link up until broadband is brought to Mullinahone.

Christmas In Church

The Christmas season in St Michael’s got off to a good start with a well attended Penitential Service on Sunday evening. Mass on Christmas Eve will be at 8pm. It is well that all young people will be home and in bed before Santa arrives. Masses on Christmas Day will be at 9.30am and 11.30am.

Anniversary Masses next weekend, Sadurday evening 8pm; December 22nd: anniversary: Peter Hally, Ballycullen; Sunday, December 23rt: anniversary11.30pm: Paddy Brett, Oakfield; Monday, December 24th: anniversary 10am: Martin Phelan, Bellevue.

Greetings

The correspondent would like to extend to all his readers his good wishes for a happy and a holy Christmas.

Credit Union pays Good dividend week Dec 12th

E-mail Print PDF

There was a good attendance at the Mullinahone Credit union‘s 30th AGM in the Knocknagow centreThe AGM was attended by the members auditor Lionel Steen. Once again the figures presented in the financial report which has been circulated to all members, with notice of the AGM made good reading.

According to the report the current assets of Mullinahone credit union stand at 3.64 million euro. If growth in the next year which began for our credit union on October 1st keep pace with last years growth the assets of Mullinahone credit union thin time next year will be in access of 4million euro.

The growth rate last year was over 12 percent. The growth in assets is a heavy surplus allowed a dividend of 3 per cent to be declared on shares or members saving on the AGM.

During the last year the credit union advanced more than one million euro in loans to members. Last year was the first time this target was achieved it is a far cry indeed from the figures dreamt of by the credit union founder members 30 years ago.

Lotto

The local jackpot was not won on December 3rd. The numbers drawn were:8, 16, 22 and 28. There were five winners of the match 3 prize: Davina Watson, Ger Costello, Ann Gleeson, Paddy Doheny and Jackie Grinsell, who shared the prize of €150. Next draw will be on Monday, when the jackpot could be worth €4,250. Christmas meat vouchers will also be raffled.

Pernitential Service

The Christmas ceremonies in St. Michael’s NS will be begin on Sunday evening at 7pm. The lead off will be a penitential service. We are reminded in the parish newsletter that attending the penitential service is the most important preparation for Christmas.

Isertkieran Cemetery

Our congratulations to Johnny Houlihan and his team on winning an award from South Tipperary Co Council in the graveyards competition. Isertkieran received an award as the most improved cemetery.

Well done to Johnny and his support team and to the public who helped out by tending to graves of loved ones in Isertkieran. To quote an old Knocknagow greeting “God bless the work”

Christmas Outing

Our Knocknagow Social Club are off on their annual Christmas outing tomorrow (Thursday). Lunch will be in the Slievenamon Golf Club. The social club’s Christmas Draw will take place at the lunch. This will be the last meeting of the social club, as the club goes into hibernation after the lunch until it re-opens in the spring.

Website

The new Mullinahone website continues to develop. Inform family members away from Mullinahone to have a look at the new and improved site over Christmas. Anybody interested in keeping the website up to date or improving or increasing its content should contact John Quirke. Any assistance would be appreciated as Mullinahone seeks to embrace 21st century technology.

Whatever about contributing to the site be sure to pay it a visit be it from Durban, Darvin, Dublin or even Drangan.

Mullinahone Magazine

Perhaps you are more old fashioned and would prefer the written word. If that is the case then perhaps the 2007/2008 Mullinahone Magazine is the one for you. As always the goings on in the parish over the last year are recounted. In fact as this is the 25th edition of the magazine there is an amount of nostalgia. Plenty of this is centred on the photo on the back cover of the magazine.

The original purpose of the magazine was to give an account of the Kickham Centenary celebrations to the people of Mullinahone at the end of 1982. It has continued to do so in every edition.

GAA

Last Sunday was an important day in South Tipperary GAA circles. In the morning all clubs in the division attended a commemoration in Churchtown Cemetery, near Carrick On Suir, where the first president of the GAA, Maurice Davin is buried. An oration was given by Peter Quinn, former president of the GAA.

The Mullinahone banner was displayed at the commemoration in the ceremony as was held by club chairman Tommy O Sullivan and club supporter Tony Nolan.

Tony’s father the late Mick Nolan was a member of the Tipperary football panel in Croke Park on Blood Sunday, 1920. The South Board GAA convention tool place in Clonmel on Sunday evening. This event brought the South Tipp centenary year to an end.

To mark the year the chairman, secretary and treasurer of each club in the division were presented with medallions as having served during that year.

In Mullinahone the recipients were Tommy O Sullivan, Oliver Vaughan and Albert Curran.

Three other Mullinahone men were also presented with medallions by the South Board in recognition of services rendered to the South Board during centenary year. The trio were Martin Cody, Ricky Sheehan and Dick Egan. At the convention Dick Egan was also re-elected as vice-chairman of the Board.

Golf Society

The local society’s next outing is to Mountain View golf course on Saturday. Please contact the committee with your entry before the event so that they may arrange teams and tee-off times. There will be prizes galore.

Annual membership of €20 is due on the day.

Village Issues

The issues of anti-social behaviour and dumping of litter are probably the biggest issues troubling the village community.

Dumping in the vicinity of the church car park near the bottle banks is unacceptable or indeed any place else either.

Perhaps silent nights will be the order of Christmas

 Under 14's receive County Medals

Mullinahone under 14 hurlers who won the South and County under 14 titles this year were presented with their medals at a most injoyable function held in the new sports hall on Saturday night last.

The young hurlers were presented with their medals by Mullinahone and Tipperary hurler Paul Curran.

Paul encouraged the players to build on their success and to further develop their skills. He also said that the greatest satisfaction that the players would ever get would come from playing with their own club teams.

A presentation was also made from the club to under 16 player Sean Curran who was a member of the Tipp under 16 All Ireland winning team this year.

The players who were presented with their medals on Saturday night were Gary Cronin (caption), Richard Walsh, Diarmuid O Halloran, George Browning, Killian Skorka, Luke Mullally, Niall Kennedy, Jack Shelly, Eoin Fennelly, Cathal Horan, William Croke, Denis Connolly, Stephen Quirke, Jack McCarthy, Sean Walzer, David Walzer, Conor Vaughan, Graham Horan, Paul Gayson, Michael Dunne, Joe Hogan, Chris O Brien and Robert Reilly.

There will be prizes galore as Santa Clause has promised to advance a sub. Annual membership of €20 is due on the day.

New Play

It would seem that inspiration has struck local playwright William Egan once again. His latest offering comes at an opportune time when Mahon Tribunal is investigating the banks and the bankers or is it politicians and planning. The latest offering seems to be, sit for an early.

Well Done Emma

In the 1970s and early 1980s when Mullinahone was not a hurling force, the Ballydonnell pair of Jimsy Kelly and Joe Williams were generally acknowledged as the two leading adult hurlers of the group, especially as far as skill was concerned. We all know how the next generation of Kellys have advanced to the top of the hurling pile.

They recent All Ireland club camogie final won by Cashel, say another generation of the Williams family win an All Ireland camogie medal. Our congratulations to Emma Williams who was a member of that Cashel panel.

Emma is the daughter of the earlier mentioned Joe and Ann Williams. She began her career hurling in Mullinahone before moving on to camogie with Slievenamon and then Cashel.

Christmas Outing

The local Knocknagow Retired Peoples Club will hold their annual Christmas outing on December 13.

The next draw will be on Monday when the jackpot could be worth €4,100.

Mullinahone Bishop

The parish of Mullinahone joins with the Diocese of Ossory in congratulating the new Bishop of Ossory, Bishop Seamus Freeman.

Bishop Seamus, though reared in Coolagh, where his mother still resides, was not born in Kilkenny or Ossory. He was born in the parish of Mullinahone.

A little known fact is that his two parents Jimmy Freeman R.I.P and Biddy McGuire were natives of Mullinahone and both were in the same class in Kilvemnon NS in the late 1920s and early 1930s. They were later to marry and then some time after moved to Coolagh with their young son Seamus.

www.Mullinahone.net

Kitty Purcell Loved Mullinahone Well

E-mail Print PDF

Kitty Purcell Loved Mullinahone Well

Local people were shocked last week at the death of Kitty Purcell of Kickham Street. Kitty was a somewhat reclusive lady and was not in the best of health for many years. She was in her early 60s.

She lived almost all her live in Kickham Street or Chapel Street, as it would be known by some of the older people. Kitty was born at the top of the street to Jack Hickey and Peggy Brett who kept a shop where her brother Eddie now lives.

Officially she was Catherine Ann which soon became Kitty the name she retained to the end of her life. In her younger days Kitty worked as a barmaid in Murphy’s of Grangemockler. She later married Paddy Purcell, eventually moving back to her home street.

She was keenly interested in reading and politics.

Kitty’s remains reposed overnight in St Michael’s Church, Mullinahone, where her funeral Mass the following day was celebrated by parish priest Fr John McGrath. The Mass was served by Kelly Hickey, Kitty’s niece. Two members of the Hickey family took the readings: Paddy Hickey (cousin) and her nephew’s wife Marie Hickey. The prayers of the faithful were recited by Marie Hickey, Michael Hickey, John Hickey and Mary Hickey.

The offertory gifts were presented by Kitty’s son and daughter Patrick Purcell and Margaret Purcell and by her loyal friend Phyllis Direen who had called on her every day for the last 24 years. After her funeral Mass Kitty’s remains were interred in the adjoining cemetery. To her son and daughter Patrick and Margaret we extend our sympathies, also to her brothers Tommy and Eddie Hickey and to her extended family. May the soul of Catherine Ann (Kitty) Purcell rest in peace in her native Mullinahone which se loved so well.

Cemetery Appeal

All who prayed in our parish cemeteries during November were impressed at how tidy they were. Each year the local authority gives a grant for grass cutting but this falls well short of the real expense incurred.

Voluntary effort also helps but again more is needed. The cemetery beside St Michael’s Church is not part of this scheme. Our CommunityCouncil ould appreciate your support in showing reverence for all our dead. A donation of €10 each year would greatly help. You may give at church or at any of the local shops.

Local Lotto

There was no jackpot winner of the local lotto on November 19.

The numbers drawn were 9, 11,13 and 18. We did have two people who shared the match 3 prize of €150. Our congrats to both Lily Neary and Debbie Denny.

Next jackpot draw will be on Monday when the jackpot could reach €3,950.

Table Quiz

The first anniversary of the death of Rita Keating of Ballyogue will take place whis weekend. After her death her family in appreciation held a fundraising sale of work in aid of St. Brigid’s. This will take the form of a table quiz in TJ Macs tomorrow (Thursday) at 9.30pm. Teams of four can be made up on the night.

A Surplus of Priests

In these increasingly secular days it is most unusual to have a surplus of priests. In a single priest parish such as our own it is most unusual still except at special ceremonies. However on November 10 the congretation at evening Mass had a pleasant surprise when Fr McGrath PP was assisted in saying Mass by no lesst than three visiting Australian priests.

All three had Mullinahone connections hich they were pleased to share with the congregation. Also, the arrival of the three (they were a bit early for the Wise Men) was a fine testimony of the faith of Mullinahone people who have emigrated overseas in times past. The three priests were Fr Brendan Quirke, whose family roots were in Poulacapple, Fr Matthew Mullan who worked with the late Fr Tom Kennedy (Crab Ditch) in the diocese of Maitland and Fr Paul Ventien (also a good Mullinahone name). Fr Ventien was educated in the secondary school where the Bro Joseph Crowley of Kilvemnon was a teacher for many years.

Cards in Coolagh

Coolagh cards for Christmas have begun. Each Thursday night from now until Christmas games of 25 will be played in coolagh parish hall at 8pm. Prizes will consist of hams and hampers so there is every chance of the Christmas dinner as well as many hours of enjoyable card play.

Parish News

Congratulations to Eugene Brett of Oakfield who was recently wed to Nina Smith of Athlone.

Sympathy to the families of Catherine Purcell, Kickham Street and of Patrick O Brien, Tinakelly who both died recently.

Anniversary Masses next weekend, Saturday 8pm, anniversary Ellen Hickey, Fethard Street, Sunday 11.30am.

Anniversary Rita Keating Ballyogue.

Shoe Box Appeal

Poulacapple NS were omitted in error from a list of partons of the Shoe Box Appeal. Apologies and a big belated thank you to the pupils and teachers of Poulacapple NS for all their boxes. Also thanks to Fr McGrath for making some late deliveries to Thurles Collection Centre.

Reflection

If you love life, life will love you back.

Mullinahone Magazine

It is out, warts and all. The Mullinahone magazine (25th anniversary edition of Knocknagow News) hit the newstands or shops over the weekend. Again it seems to be a fine publication.

Joe Tobin intorduces us to The Champ. We look a Mullinahone through silver tinted glasses. Some older photos with many absent friends. The 25th Kickham Country Weekend reports. By the looks of things we have left over marks on diocese of Ossory.

Some elders recall retail outlets in Mullinahone (even before my time). Our primary schools report extensively and we have a lovely picture parade at the centre. All of that is very litle of what is a fine book. Great credit to Mick Larkin but it is enough to be going on with.

Mullinahone GAA

Emma strikes All Ireland glory. In 1997 when Tipperary lost to Clare in the All Ireland final, Pat Kenny brought his Kenny Live show to Mullinahone to interview some or our county hurlers. On the television footage many of our young juveniles were filmed showing their skills to the nation. One of those juveniles was Emms Williams. It’s ironic that ten years later Emma was to win an All Ireland senior camogie club medal with Cashel. Emma has played with Cashel in recent years but started her playing career with Mullinahone under 12s an under 14s. On behalf of all her team mates from those early days we congratulate Emma on a fantastic win. We contratulat also her proud parents Joe and Ann Williams. Of course Joe was no mean hurler himself so as the saying goes she didn’t pick it up from the ground. Enjoy your success Emma. You may be very proud.

Juvenile Medal Presentation

On next Saturday night our under 14 county champions will be presented with their medals following 8pm Mass. The function takes place in the sports hall. Everybody is welcome, as are children.

Micheal Hogan Memorial

Last Sunday in Grangemockler a wreath laying ceremony took place to remember Michael Hogan, who was shot in Croke Park. A good turn out by clubs showed the respect to this day. The graveside oration was by former president Paddy Buggy. The Mullinahone banner was carried by John Vaughan and Tony Nolan.

Representing the club were chairman Tommy O Sullivan and treasurer Albert Curran along with PRO Jackie Bolger. Dick Egan attended in his capacity as did Martin Cody as Bord na nOg vice-chairman.

It was one of those occasions that reminded us of the vast history associated with the club.

Shoe Box Appeal

It is great to report that 258 shoe boxes were collected this year. A sincere thank you to all involved, children, families, teachers, parishioners, Carol and staff, Penny’s Clonmel, Tom Fenessey, principal, Presentation Convent, Brightsparks Playschool, Angela Fogarty, Fiona Lawlor, Margaret Kennedy, Partents Council, St Joseph’s NS for all their help. Thanks also to Kathleen Holden Kelly for joining with us from Mullinahone, bringing the total to 382 children will realise that somebody cares for them.

Credit Union AGM November 23rd 2007

E-mail Print PDF

Credit Union’s 30th AGM

On December 5th Mullinahone credit union will hold its AGM. The AGM will take place in the Knocknagow Community Centre with 8pm start. This will be the 30th AGM of Mullinahone Credit union much water has flowed under the Five Eye Bridge and many changes have taken place in the local community since the first AGM of the credit union By far the biggest change has been is in the size of the credit union then and now and also of its recognition.

The news too is to be imparted to the members of the forth coming AGM is good news as usual. The audited accounts of the credit union will find their way to members along with an invitation to the AGM during the next few weeks. According to these accounts the current assets of the credit union stand at €3.64 million.

If growth continues in the next year and keeps pace with that in the last year of Mullinahone credit union this time next year will be in excess of €4,000,000. The growth rate last year was over 12 percent. The growth of the assets and the increase in the surplus of the credit union will allow healthy dividends to be declared at the AGM. During the last year the credit union advanced more than a million euro in loans to members.

This is the first year in which this target has been achieved. It is a far cry indeed from the figures dreamt of by the Credit union founder members 30 years ago. Members of the local credit union continue to grow even if the number of new members has fallen back somewhat in recent years.

Perhaps this reflects the optimism engendered by the Celtic Tiger. However, there are signs that the Tiger has something of a kitten and that expectations will have reshaped when the future becomes more uncertain.

All matters no doubt for debate when Mullinahone credit union open its doors on December 5th for the 30th AGM. The old Motto “Credit Union not for charity, not for profit but for service”

Juvenile GAA

Juvenile Calendar

People involved with the juvenile club are in the process of calling to houses in the process of calling to houses to sell their very impressive calendar to raise funds for the club for the coming year.

This is certainly a well put together calendar with our county under 14 winning team taking pride of place in the front. All of this years underage teams along with some action shots of our under 10’s taken by Neill Thompson are also included. Chairman Johnny Kennedy thanks sincerely the sponsors of the calendar who paid to have their adverts included.

Also a big thanks to Donal O Brien for the well taken team shots. At a cost of €10 it certainly makes for a nice gift for a family member living abroad. Following the visit to houses it will go on sale in various shops. By visiting homes it gives us an opportunity to meet new families in the parish and give them any information regarding the Juvenile club

Ladies Football

Hard luck to our junior ladies’ football team on losing out to Moyle Rovers in the county final played in Cloneen last Saturday.

The girls did themselves proud and the weather on the day was always going to make the game into a lottery. They’ve put in a big effort and the experience will stand to them next year.

Lotto

The local lotto jackpot was not won on Monday night last, November 19. The winning numbers were 1, 7, 12 and 14. There were however three match 3 winners who shared €150. Congratulations to Yvonne Rochford, Tom McDonnell and Mary Mullins.

Next draw will be on Monday, November 26 when the jackpot could be worth €3,800. Remember though to win you must first be in.

Cards for Christmas

Just to remind us that Christmas is on its way as ‘Cards for Christmas’ is starting this Thursday night in Coolagh. The venue is the parish hall and the starting time is 8pm. Play for hampers and hams every Thursday night from this until Christmas season. You may even be lucky enough to win the Christmas dinner. My advice is hitch up the reindeer and head for Coolagh parish hall.

Craft Fair

Camphill, Kyle, would like to thank all the local people who attended and supported their annual Craft Fair on November 11 from 2pm until 5pm.
