For the second year in a row we offer congratulations to Jack Shelly on winning an Irish Underage Boxing Championship. On Saturday last Jack became Champion in the Boy Two 57kg division. In the final, in the National Stadium, Jack defeated his opponent (the Ulster Champion) from Belfast.

Although his opponent was highly skilled and experienced, Jack forced the referee to stop the contest in the second round. Jack now becomes the first Irish Champion from the Slievenamon Boxing Club. When jack won the Boy One 48kg title last year, he was a member of the Callan Boxing Club. Much of the credit for Jacks latest win must go to the Club’s coaches and officers John Grace, Johnny Shelly and Michael Quirke.
Jacks path to the top this year began with his victory in the County Championships in Carrick on Suir. In the Munster Championships, held in Fermoy, Jack won the Munster title stopping his opponent from Bantry Boxing Club in round one. In Dublin, in the semi final, Jack was again too strong stopping the Connaught Champion in round three. The ease with which Jack won the final surprised everybody. Coach John Grace said of Jack after his victory “A talent like Jack only comes along once in a lifetime and his dedication to the sport is to be admired”.
Well done Jack, everyone in the local community is proud of you. Last year Jack who is very sporty played at centerfield for Mullinahone in their under 14 county winning hurling final.
