Teckie Brett Retires

E-mail Print

This week marked the end of Teckie Brett’s 32 years of devoted teaching service in Kilvemnon National School. We thank Teckie for her over three decades of modelling the minds of the children who passed through her most capable hands.

The people of the parish are invited to a Mass of thanksgiving in St. Michael’s Church, next Sunday evening October 12th at 7pm. A party will take place afterwards in the sports complex.

Teckies retirement certainly closes a chapter in the history of our parish schools.

The death took place recently of Davy O Brien of Carrick Road. Davy as a character and without doubt one of the best known people in the parish. Not only was he well known in Mullinahone but he was equally known in the surrounding parishes.

At the time of death, Davy was only in his very early seventies. His death took place in South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel. Davy was known far and wide as an excellent mechanic. He loved engines especially those of an older vintage. During his lifetime, he built up the Mullinahone Threshing Museum and was involved with the Annual Vintage Tractor Run around the foothills of Slievenamon. This project helped to raise finance each year for the Camphill Community in Grangemockler.

Always on for surprises, Davy had on last surprise up his sleeve. He donated his body for medical research. His funeral mass which took place in St. Michael’s Church, Mullinahone was crowded. The mass was celebrated by Fr. Breen P.P Ballingarry, who referred to Davy’s work on behalf of Camphill Community.

During the mass prayers were also offered for Davy’s daughter Statia O Brien and his brother Ned O Brien, both of whom pre-deceased him. We extend our sympathy both to his family and his friends.

May his soul rest in peace.

U16 B South Champions

Last Sunday in Cloneen our young hurlers of the future played Carrick Swans to decide who would be champions for 2008. the underfoot conditions made hurling difficult but credit must go to both teams for serving up a good competitive game.

Our lads were quick into their stride putting a goal and a couple of points on the score board in the early stages. Swan battled hard but some great hurling form our midfield ensured a good supply of ball to our forwards. Mullinahone finished strong in the second half and the score of the game came near the end with Michael Dunne passing Willie Croke who laid off the perfect pass for a great team goal.

Great credit is due to Johnny Kennedy, Eddie McCarthy and Ky Vaughan who not only had the team well prepared but have instilled good values into this team as well. It was also a matter of great pride to see the winning Capt. Danny  Croke receive the Thomas Cahill cup from championship sponsor Mullinahone Oil and presented by Martin Cody, Vice-chairman of South Tipp. Board na nOg. A good day for the little village.

The panel was: Ritchie Walsh, Killian Skorka, Danny Croke, George Browning, Diarmuid O Halloran, Gary Cronin, Niall Kennedy, Jack Shelly, Eoin Fennelly, Denis Connolly, Michael Dunne, Cathal Horan, Stephen Quirke, Willie Croke, Luke Mullally, Sean and David Walzer, Jack McCarthy, Ben O Reilly, Shane Power and Conor Vaughan.

Mullinahone Schoolboys Soccer

The local under twelve team continued their good run at the weekend in the Tipperary schoolboys league.

Mullinahone took the lead early in the first half when Seam Bermingham scored direct from a corner kick. This keeps up a remarkable scoring record – in four games Sean has scored five goals, four of them coming direct from corner kicks.

In the second half, Cahir bombarded the Mullinahone defence but the lads kept a much bigger and stronger team at bay until close to the end.

Cahir equalised from the penalty spot with minutes remaining to leave the final score 1-1.

It was once again a great team performance and the result guarantees second place in the league just behind Clonmel town.

The team: Jan Kutay, Joey Noonan, Graham Horan, Sean Bermingham, Darren Boland, Tommy Hayes, Ciaran Mockler, Michael Dunne, Aidan Buckley, Darragh Wilson, Cathal O Mahoney, Conor Maher, Corey Padgett Trudgill, Joe Hogan, Brian Kenny, Cameron Moynihan, Jack Hennessy, Aidan Ward, Yam Zur, James Lahart.

It would be nice to see a few more supporters turn up at the games to watch this bunch of committed and skilful players in action.

They play with and for each other and take great pride in representing the club. The enthusiasm of those unlucky no to be picked is also worth commending as these lads turn up week after week waiting a chance to shine.

Last week their opportunity came and many of the younger members of the squad rose to the occasion in a thrilling 4-4 draw with Moyglass. Among those delighted to make their full appearance of the season were Aidan Ward, Yam Zur, Paul Luttrell and James Lahart.

Aisling and Wayne Avoid “Ike”

The wedding took place in St. Michael’s Church, Mullinahone on Friday September 5th of Aisling Grant, of Ballydonnell. Aisling is the second daughter of John and Mary Grant of Ballydonnell.

Aishling’s groom was Wayne Dunne who is the youngest son of Jim and Maureen Dunne of Geashill, Co. Offaly. Mass was celebrated and the wedding ceremony performed by Fr John McGrath P.P, Mullinahone. Aishling’s bridesmaids were her two sisters Pamela and Laura while the best man and the groomsman were brothers of the groom, Derek and Alan Dunne. The brides’ nephew Sean was the pageboy and ring bearer, while Eabha Dunne the grooms’ niece made a lovely flower girl.

The bride was given away in time honoured fashion by her father John Grant who also stole the award for the best speech at the wedding, even if he was run close by Fr. McGrath. At the wedding Mass, the gifts were brought to the altar by the mothers of the bride and groom, Mary Grant and Maureen Dunne. The readers at the Mass were Sandra Dunne and Lisa Clancy, while the prayers of the faithful were recited by Doreen Kelly, Eugene Corcoran, Katie Marshall, Sarah O Regan, Elaine Carey and Ian O Halloran.

A communion reflection was read by the brides’ friend Sandra O Keeffe. Ushers in the Church were Leanne O Regan and Rachel Brett while the Mass was served by Niamh Crotty and Clare and Alan Kelly. Images of the “big day” were captured on video/dvd by Eamon Anglim and photographed by Donal O Brien. A reception for the family and friends was held later in the Ormonde Hotel, Kilkenny where guests enjoyed themselves until the “small hours” and indeed the not so small hours.

Ashling and Wayne spent their honeymoon in Miami and the Bahamas as this was early September; it was the height of the hurricane season in that part of the world. The newly weds spent some days playing “hide and seek” with hurricane Ike who failed to find them. Both have since returned to this part of the world and have taken up residence in their new home in Co. Offaly.

We wish them many years of wedded bliss together. Or final words echoes the advice read by Sandra O Keeffe “It is not only marrying the right partner, it is in being the right partner”.

Ad multos annos Ashling and Wayne.

Firm to question tag tender process in EU

E-mail Print

By Declan O'Brien

Tuesday October 07 2008

A leading livestock tag manufacturer has questioned the Department of Agriculture's tendering process for the supply of cattle tags for the national herd.

TJ Gormley, of Tuam-based firm Cormac Tagging, said that the manner in which the contract was evaluated "lacked transparency" and was "anti competitive".

However, the department has strongly rebutted Mr Gormley's assertions.

Mr Gormley claimed that the department had refused an independent assessment of the various tags which had been put forward by companies for the contract.

He said his company's tags, which are accepted in 27 countries and are used in Northern Ireland and England, had been successfully trialled on several farms in the Republic, but that these holdings had not been visited by department officials although their details had been forwarded by Mr Gormley.

This is the third time Cormac Tagging have applied for the contract, but Mr Gormley was adamant that his anger at not securing the contract was not a case of "sour grapes".

"We have spent a lot of money on trials over the last three years. Our tag is Pas 44 approved, which is the British and European standard for cattle tags, but the assessment [of the tag] from the department has been completely inconsistent each year," he maintained.
